South African Local Elections: Most Seats Won — in 2026

The winner is the party with the most council seats, ward and proportional representation (PR) seats combined, won in the metropolitan and local municipal councils in the 2026 general local government elections (scheduled for November 4, 2026), per the seat results published by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (summed across councils if no national total is published). District council seats, by-elections and any individual ward election postponed from the general polling day are not counted. Independents and other parties are not combined into a party. If two parties have the same number of seats, the one with the higher total of PR votes cast nationally in those councils, per the Electoral Commission, will resolve to Yes and all others to No. This market is eligible for accelerated resolution by a consensus of media calls that a party won the most council seats; reports that a party won the most votes, a metro or control of councils do not count.
